After the graduation he worked as an engineer at the Lugansk diesel locomotive building plant. Served in the army. From 1971 till 2002 M. Zagirnyak worked as a research assistant, senior lecturer, associate professor, head of the department and pro-rector of Volodymyr Dahl East Ukrainian National University. For a several years he worked at the Universities of Kentucky and Texas as the winner of the long-term USA government grants for programs IREX (Electrical Engineering - 1983-84) and Fulbright (Education Administration - 1997-98). In November 2002 he was elected Rector of Kremenchuk Mykhailo Ostohradskyi National University and he has been the head of it till now.
